SS316L (Type 316L Stainless Steel) Milling Balls—chemically composed of approximately 16–18% Chromium, 10–14% Nickel, 2–3% Molybdenum, and a strictly controlled ultra-low Carbon content (< 0.03%), with the balance being Iron—represent the highest grade of stainless steel grinding media available for high-energy laboratory and industrial milling applications. The "L" stands for Low Carbon, which provides vital thermodynamic protection against carbide precipitation, while the addition of Molybdenum radically upgrades its chemical and electrochemical stability compared to standard SS304.

SS316L is selected over SS304 for two primary technical reasons: (1) Resistance to Chloride Pitting & Acidic Attack: Standard SS304 quickly develops micro-pitting and surface rust when exposed to aqueous solutions containing chlorides (like salt water) or organic acids during prolonged wet milling cycles. The Molybdenum in SS316L completely alters the passive chromium oxide surface layer, making it highly resilient against localized pitting, crevice corrosion, and chemical breakdown under fluid stress. (2) Mitigation of Intergranular Corrosion (Friction-Induced Heating): High-energy planetary ball milling transforms intense mechanical impact into localized thermal energy, which can cause internal temperatures to spike. In high-carbon steels, this heat triggers carbide precipitation (chromium binds with carbon at the grain boundaries, starving the surrounding area of corrosion protection). Because SS316L limits carbon to less than 0.03%, this degradation pathway is blocked, preserving the chemical purity and structural integrity of the media.
