HTFSI (Bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, HN(SO2CF3)2), frequently utilized in its acid form or as a functional proton/imide donor, serves as a specialized electrolyte additive in advanced lithium-ion, sodium-ion, and specialized aqueous/non-aqueous battery formulations. While its deprotonated salt counterpart (LiTFSI or NaTFSI) is a mainstream high-performance conductive salt, introducing the acid form (HTFSI) in trace amounts triggers distinct chemical and electrochemical modifications.
The key functions of HTFSI are: (1) In-Situ Salt Generation & Solvation Tuning: When added in controlled minor quantities to an electrolyte containing metal oxides or hydroxides (or when reacting with trace basic impurities), HTFSI converts in-situ into the corresponding metal TFSI salt, seamlessly integrating into the bulk electrolyte without introducing foreign halide contaminants. (2) Protic Pre-Passivation / Initial SEI Engineering: As a strong Brønsted acid, trace amounts of HTFSI can participate in controlled initial proton-assisted or anion-derived reactions on reactive metal or graphite anodes. This aids in constructing a robust, inorganic-organic hybrid Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) rich in nitrogen, sulfur, and fluorine fragments (such as -SO2- and -CF3 species). (3) Scavenging Basic Impurities: HTFSI acts as an effective neutralizer for alkaline or basic contaminants that often linger in separator membranes, current collectors, or poorly dried active materials, preventing alkaline-catalyzed degradation of standard carbonate solvents or salt binders.
