PTO (Pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone) powder is an advanced, high-performance organic small-molecule cathode material utilized in aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). Featuring an extended polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon core fused with four electrochemically active carbonyl groups (C=O), PTO offers exceptional theoretical capacity and rapid redox kinetics, positioning it as a leading candidate for sustainable, high-rate energy storage.

The key electrochemical and redox chemistry features of PTO as organic cathode in aqueous zinc-ion battery are: (1) Multi-Electron Carbonyl Redox: The electrochemical storage mechanism relies on the reversible enolization of its four carbonyl groups. During discharge, the C=O bonds accept electrons and reversibly bind incoming cations to form stable enolate species. (2) High Theoretical Capacity: Because multiple electrons are transferred per molecular weight unit, PTO delivers a remarkably high theoretical specific capacity (often exceeding 250-300 mAh/g depending on the exact redox voltage plateau). (3) Conjugated π-π Stacking and Stability: The rigid, planar pyrene core provides extensive aromatic π-π conjugation. This not only enhances intrinsic electronic conductivity relative to simpler aliphatic organics but also stabilizes the molecular crystal structure against severe structural collapse during continuous ion insertion.

The main advantages over the inorganic cathode are: (1) Superior Rate Capability: Ion storage occurs via fast surface/interfacial coordination rather than sluggish, high-activation-energy solid-state diffusion, enabling exceptional high-current charging and discharging performance. (2) Environmental Sustainability: Composed entirely of earth-abundant carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, PTO eliminates the supply chain bottlenecks and geopolitical risks associated with transition-metal mining (such as cobalt, nickel, and vanadium). (3) Mechanical Compliance: Organic crystal lattices easily accommodate the volumetric strain of ion insertion, resulting in excellent structural resilience over thousands of cycles when properly stabilized.
