Add-Ons
Phenazine (PNZ) and its derivatives represent an important class of n-type organic cathode materials for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). They provide a sustainable, low-toxicity alternative to inorganic transition-metal oxides (like V2O5 and MnO2), leveraging flexible conjugated molecular scaffolds that accommodate charge carriers without structural breakdown.
Its main advantages are: (1) No Structural Degradation: Unlike transition metal hosts, organic backbones rely on coordination chemistry rather than rigid intercalation lattices, preventing irreversible phase transitions and capacity fade caused by divalent Zn^{2+} electrostatic repulsion. (2) Fast Reaction Kinetics: Azine nitrogen coordination with protons provides high-rate capabilities (often maintaining functionality up to 10-20 A/g). (3) Tunable Redox Potentials: Incorporating electron-withdrawing groups (e.g., -CN, -CF3) raises the discharge operating potential (typically ~0.61-1.1 V vs. Zn/Zn}^{2+}).
