The Cu/PET or PI/Cu composite foil is a next-generation "sandwich-structured" material designed to replace solid copper foils in the negative electrodes (anodes) of lithium-ion batteries. It consists of a central PET (polyethylene terephthalate) or PI (polyimide) plastic core flanked by ultra-thin layers of copper on both sides. This technology addresses the two biggest challenges in modern battery design: weight reduction and fire safety. Its main advantages are (1) improved safety, (2) increased energy density, (3) Elimination of "copper burrs", (4) decreased cost.
