The microporous copper current collector is a specialized anode substrate used in high-performance lithium-ion batteries. Unlike standard "solid" copper foil, this version has a network of micro-scale holes (typically ranging from 30 um to 120 um in diameter) engineered into the metal. Microporous foil changes the internal physics of the cell:
(1) Bidirectional Ion Transport: In a normal battery, lithium ions can only move through the separator. With porous collectors, ions can theoretically move through the collector itself. This effectively halves the transport distance for lithium ions, which can quadruple the battery's fast-charging (C-rate) capability.
(2) Enhanced Surface Adhesion: The "holes" and the rougher surface area created during processing act like mechanical anchors. This prevents the active anode material (graphite or silicon) from peeling off (delaminating) during the expansion and contraction of charging cycles.
(3) Superior Electrolyte Infiltration: The pores allow the liquid electrolyte to soak into the electrode stack much faster and more uniformly during the "wetting" stage of manufacturing. This reduces production time and ensures there are no "dry spots" that lead to premature battery failure.
