The 316L stainless steel (SS316L) is a specialized current collector material primarily used in aqueous batteries, solid-state batteries, and high-voltage systems where standard aluminum or copper foils fail due to chemical or electrochemical instability. Its primary advantage is its exceptional corrosion resistance and mechanical strength, making it a "heavy-duty" alternative to traditional current collectors. In aqueous battery system, water-based electrolytes are highly corrosive. Aluminum dissolves quickly in these environments, while SS316L forms a stable passivation film (chromium oxide) that protects the foil from electrolyte attack. In solid-state battery application, some sulfide-based solid electrolytes react with copper to form copper sulfide (Cu7S4). SS316L is chemically more stable in contact with these sulfide electrolytes.
