BDTT (4,4'-Bi-1,3,2-dioxathiolane 2,2',2',2'-tetraoxide) is an advanced, multi-functional cyclic sulfate/sulfite-derived compound engineered as a high-performance electrolyte additive for lithium-ion batteries. Structurally representing a dimeric cyclic sulfate architecture, BDTT is specifically tailored to stabilize electrode-electrolyte interfaces under high-voltage and high-temperature stress.

The main functional roles of the BDTT are: (1) Sacrificial Cathode-Electrolyte Interphase (CEI) Formation: BDTT preferentially oxidizes at the surface of high-voltage transition metal oxide cathodes prior to bulk electrolyte decomposition. This sacrificial oxidation yields a uniform, passivating CEI layer that suppresses continuous electrolyte oxidation and parasitic gas generation. (2) Impedance Mitigation & Transition-Metal Protection: By establishing a robust protective film, BDTT prevents the progressive impedance growth typically associated with repeated solvent breakdown on high-voltage surfaces. It also helps mitigate structural degradation and transition-metal dissolution from polycrystalline or single-crystal oxide cathodes. (3) Anode Passivation Support (SEI Enhancement): Beyond its primary role at the positive electrode, reduction products of cyclic sulfate dimers can migrate or participate in forming an inorganic-rich, stable Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) on graphite or silicon-based anodes, curbing ongoing electrolyte consumption.

Its primary electrochemical domains are: (1) High-Voltage Lithium-Ion Full Cells: Integrated into carbonate-based master electrolytes (e.g., LiPF6 in EC/EMC) to support cells cycled at upper cut-off voltages exceeding 4.5 V to 4.6 V (such as with high-nickel NMC532, NMC811, or high-voltage cobalt systems). (2) High-Temperature Performance Enhancement: Applied to suppress capacity fade, minimize swelling/gassing, and preserve capacity retention during aggressive high-temperature storage and cycling protocols.
