Dimethyl Methylphosphonate (DMMP) is a highly important compound in battery technology, primarily used as a flame-retardant additive in the organic liquid electrolytes of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Its primary role is to significantly enhance the safety of the battery by making the flammable carbonate-based electrolyte non-flammable or self-extinguishing. When the electrolyte begins to burn, DMMP decomposes at high temperatures. This decomposition releases phosphorus-containing radicals, which can effectively scavenge highly reactive radicals that drive the combustion chain reaction. By inhibiting these chain-branching reactions, DMMP dramatically suppresses the combustion of the volatile electrolyte vapors in the gas phase.
