Bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) methylphosphonate (frequently designated as TFMP or TFEMP) is a specialized organophosphonate compound engineered specifically as a high-efficiency flame-retardant additive and interfacial modifier for advanced lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries. By pairing a central phosphorus atom bearing a direct carbon-phosphorus (P-CH3) methyl linkage with two strongly electron-withdrawing 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl ester groups, TFMP effectively bridges thermal safety enhancement with high-voltage electrochemical stability.

Its functional roles in electrolyte engineering are: (1) High-Efficiency Flame Retardancy & Radical Scavenging: TFMP acts as a powerful dual-phase flame retardant. Upon thermal abuse or ignition, it decomposes to release phosphorus-containing active radicals in the vapor phase that quench combustion chain reactions, alongside forming a dense, fire-retardant carbonaceous-inorganic char layer on the separator and electrode surfaces in the condensed phase. (2) Interphase (SEI/CEI) Passivation: Because of its tailored reduction and oxidation behavior, TFMP participates in early-stage electrochemical formation. It assists in building a robust, hybrid inorganic-organic protective film enriched with metal fluorides (LiF) and phosphate/phosphonate decomposition species, which shields the anode and high-voltage cathode from continuous electrolyte consumption. (3) Compatibility with High-Voltage Cathodes: The strongly electron-withdrawing -CF3 groups stabilize the phosphonate core against premature oxidative degradation, allowing TFMP to be utilized in high-energy cells operating above 4.3 V.
