TPFPB (Tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane, B(C6F5)3) is a powerful Lewis acid and one of the most widely studied functional electrolyte additives for advanced lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries. Featuring a central boron atom bonded to three strongly electron-withdrawing pentafluorophenyl rings, TPFPB acts as a potent anion receptor and interfacial stabilizer.
The key functional roles of TPFPB as battery electrolyte additive are shown below: (1) Anion Receptor & Ionic Dissociation Enhancer: The electron-deficient boron center has an unfilled p-orbital, giving it a strong affinity for Lewis bases (such as anions like PF6^- or trace nucleophiles). By coordinating with anions, TPFPB helps promote the dissociation of lithium salts, increasing the effective concentration of free lithium ions and enhancing ionic conductivity. (2) Scavenging Impurities and Hydrolysis Byproducts: TPFPB acts as an exceptional scavenger for water (H2O) and fluoride ions (F-) generated from the decomposition or hydrolysis of standard lithium salts (like LiPF6). By neutralizing destructive species like hydrofluoric acid (HF), it prevents acid-catalyzed destruction of the active cathode structure and current collector corrosion. (3) Cathode Electrolyte Interphase (CEI) and Anode SEI Modification: TPFPB participates in forming stable, protective surface films on both electrodes. On high-voltage cathodes, it prevents direct electrolyte oxidation; on graphite or lithium-metal anodes, its fluorinated aromatic structure contributes to a robust, inorganic-rich (e.g., LiF-containing) Solid Electrolyte Interphase that suppresses dendrite formation
