VC is a cyclic carbonate similar to the solvent Ethylene Carbonate (EC), but it contains a carbon-carbon double bond (C=C), which dictates its superior function as an interphase-forming agent. VC's main role is to enhance the formation of the Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) layer on the anode (typically graphite) during the first few charge cycles.
