GA (Gum Arabic) is a complex mixture of polysaccharides (carbohydrates) and glycoproteins (proteins with attached sugar chains), which researchers have leveraged for a "fiber-reinforced concrete" binding effect. It provides strong chemical bonding via abundant hydroxyl (-OH) and carboxylic (-COOH) functional groups, which ensures strong adhesion to the active material (like silicon) and the current collector. GA also provides mechanical flexibility and tolerance to the massive volume changes that occur during cycling.
