Bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) carbonate (commonly abbreviated as DFDEC, TFEC, or BtFEC; formula (CF3CH2O)2-C=O) is a symmetrical fluorinated linear carbonate solvent/co-solvent and safety additive for advanced battery electrolytes.  It is the fully fluorinated analog of standard diethyl carbonate (DEC), featuring six electron-withdrawing fluorine atoms on its ethyl tails.

Extended High-Voltage Oxidation Stability (>4.8 V): The six electronegative fluorine atoms strongly depress the molecule's Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital (HOMO) energy level. This gives DFDEC superior anodic oxidation resistance compared to unfluorinated linear carbonates like DEC, EMC, or DMC. It prevents continuous electrolyte decomposition and suppresses transition metal dissolution (TMD) in nickel-rich cathodes (such as NMC811) operating at upper cut-off voltages of 4.5-4.8 V.

Fluorine-Rich Interphase Engineering (LiF-Dominated SEI/CEI): Under reductive potentials at the anode and oxidative conditions at the cathode, DFDEC undergoes sacrificial decomposition: (1) Anode (SEI): Forms a dense, mechanically rigid, inorganic lithium fluoride (LiF)-rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase. This suppresses dendrite growth on lithium-metal anodes and mitigates structural degradation on silicon-graphite (Si/C) composites. (2) Cathode (CEI): Builds a thin protective Cathode Electrolyte Interphase that prevents interfacial impedance buildup and gas evolution.

Flame Suppression & Thermal Safety: DFDEC acts as a functional fire suppressant and flame-retardant solvent in battery formulations: Radical Trapping: During extreme thermal abuse or combustion, the released fluorine species trap reactive hydrogen radicals (H*) to form stable HF molecules, breaking the free-radical combustion chain reaction.  High thermal stability significantly lowers heat-release rates during thermal runaway events compared to conventional DEC/EMC blends.
