1,1-Difluoro-2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethane (commonly designated as DMEE or DFE) is a specialized asymmetric fluorinated ether engineered as an advanced electrolyte co-solvent, diluent, and solvation-sheath modifier for next-generation lithium-metal, lithium-sulfur, and sodium-ion batteries. By combining a fluorinated terminal segment with a polar oligoether backbone, DMEE bridges the gap between conventional glymes and heavily fluorinated media.

Its functional roles in electrolyte engineering are: (1) Solvation Sheath & Anion Coordination Tuning: DMEE’s moderated electron-donating capability prevents over-solvation of alkali metal ions (Li+, Na+), encouraging the formation of contact ion pairs (CIPs) and aggregates (AGGs) even at moderate salt concentrations. (2) Passivation & Interphase Engineering (SEI/CEI): Because of its tailored reduction and oxidation potentials, DMEE participates in early-stage electrochemical decomposition. This promotes the precipitation of a dense, inorganic-rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) and Cathode Electrolyte Interphase (CEI) enriched with metal fluorides (LiF / NaF). (3) High-Voltage Oxidative Stability: The electron-withdrawing fluorinated tail helps suppress premature oxidative breakdown at the positive electrode, raising the operational voltage ceiling for cells operating above 4.3 V.

The primary electrochemical domains are: (1) High-Voltage Lithium-Metal Batteries: Integrated into liquid or localized high-concentration electrolyte (LHCE) formulations to suppress lithium dendrite propagation and protect high-nickel layered oxide cathodes (e.g., NMC811) from continuous parasitic oxidation. (2) Lithium-Sulfur (Li-S) & Sodium Systems: Deployed to restrain polysulfide dissolution in sulfur systems or to enhance Coulombic efficiency and interfacial reversibility in sodium metal and hard carbon chemistries.
