OTE ($1H,1H,5H-octafluoropentyl 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl ether, widely designated in commercial and battery literature as HFE-6512) is an advanced, long-chain hydrofluoroether (HFE) utilized as a high-boiling-point co-solvent, diluent, and functional additive in specialized lithium-ion and lithium-metal battery electrolytes.

The key benefits of OTE are: (1) Superior Volatility Control & High Thermal Threshold: Its high boiling point (~ 133 °C) prevents solvent loss, bubble generation, and pressure build-up during elevated-temperature cycling or aggressive thermal abuse testing. (2) Extended High-Voltage Stability Window: Expands the electrochemical stability window past 4.5 V to 5.0 V vs. Li}/Li+, protecting high-voltage nickel-rich layered oxides and high-voltage spinel cathodes from destructive oxidative decomposition. (3) Suppression of Parasitic Side Reactions: Reduces transition metal dissolution and minimizes solvent co-intercalation into graphitic or silicon-carbon anodes.Intrinsic Non-Flammability: The high mass fraction of fluorine atoms effectively quenches the flammability of conventional carbonate co-solvents.
