EC (Ethylene Carbonate) is the most crucial solvent component in the electrolyte solution of virtually all commercial Lithium-Ion Batteries (LIBs). It is a cyclic carbonate used in a blend with low-viscosity linear carbonates to achieve the necessary balance of properties. Its essential role is twofold: dissolving the lithium salt and forming the Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI).
