Add-Ons
Triglyme (chemically known as triethylene glycol dimethyl ether or G3) is a high-boiling, acyclic polyether engineered as a premium solvent, chelating agent, and structural matrix for advanced lithium-metal, lithium-sulfur, and sodium-ion liquid electrolytes. By extending the ethylene glycol chain compared to shorter glymes (like monoglyme/DME or diglyme/G2), G3 provides unique solvation and thermal safety profiles tailored for high-performance electrochemical cells.
Its functional roles in electrolyte engineering are: (1) Solvation Shell Engineering (HCE / LHCE Systems): G3 is a primary building block for High-Concentration Electrolytes (HCEs) and Localized High-Concentration Electrolytes (LHCEs). Its multi-ether backbone binds tightly to lithium or sodium ions, reducing free solvent activity and shifting reduction/oxidation pathways toward beneficial anion-derived interphases. (2) Thermal Stability & Volatility Reduction: Unlike short-chain, highly volatile ethers (such as 1,3-dioxolane or dimethoxyethane), G3's significantly elevated boiling point (~216 °C) and low vapor pressure drastically suppress evaporation risks and enhance the overall thermal safety margin of the cell. (3) Polysulfide Retention Management: In lithium-sulfur systems, its balanced solvent power helps regulate the dissolution and transport of intermediate polysulfides when paired with appropriate fluorinated diluents, mitigating the destructive shuttle effect.
