Tetraglyme (Tetraethylene Glycol Dimethyl Ether, G4) is a linear polyether solvent belonging to the class of glymes (CH3O(CH2CH2O)nCH3, where n=4 for Tetraglyme). Trtraglyme is primarily utilized in advanced battery chemistries due to its strong ability to chelate (complex) with alkali metal ions and form a stable interphase on highly reactive metal anodes. Tetraglyme's linear ether structure allows it to chelate (or complex) the alkali metal cation (Li+, Na+) strongly via its multiple oxygen atoms. This strong coordination helps to dissolve high concentrations of lithium salts (LiTFSI, LiFSI) effectively, and the specific solvation structure it creates is crucial for dendrite suppression in LMBs.
