Py12FSI (1-Ethyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide) is a high-performance room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) that pairs the robust, reduction-resistant pyrrolidinium cation with the highly conductive, flexible FSI anion. Compared to its TFSI-based counterpart (Py12TFSI), the smaller and more labile FSI anion grants Py12FSI superior transport properties, making it a favored solvent/salt matrix for advanced lithium and sodium batteries operating under more demanding kinetic conditions.

The key physicochemical & electrochemical characteristics are: (1) Enhanced Ionic Conductivity & Lower Viscosity: Because the FSI anion has a lower molecular weight, smaller ionic radius, and weaker charge localization than TFSI, Py12FSI exhibits significantly lower viscosity and higher ionic conductivity at room temperature. This directly mitigates the mass-transport limitations typically associated with ionic liquid electrolytes. (2) Favorable Interfacial Chemistry (SEI Formation): The FSI anion readily decomposes under cathodic polarization to form a stable, inorganic-rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) containing lithium fluoride (LiF) and sulfur-oxygen species. This enables much more efficient and stable plating/stripping behavior on lithium or sodium metal anodes. (3) Wide Electrochemical Window: While its oxidative stability limit is slightly lower than that of Py12TFSI due to the more reactive sulfonyl groups, it still maintains an exceptionally broad window (typically stable up to ~ 4.5-4.8 V vs. Li}/Li+), rendering it well-suited for high-voltage systems like LMFP or mid-nickel cathodes.
