Freeze-dried (lyophilized) PEDOT:PSS powder is a solid-state precursor format designed to overcome the strict processing and shelf-life limitations of commercial aqueous dispersions (e.g., Clevios™ PH1000). By dehydrating the core–shell colloidal micelles under vacuum, it provides a stable, highly concentrated, or solvent-adaptable raw material for bioelectronic inks, conductive hydrogels, and 3D neural scaffolds.
Standard PEDOT:PSS is supplied as a dilute (1.0–1.3 wt%) aqueous suspension. Transforming it into a lyophilized powder addresses several formulation bottlenecks: (1) Solvent Incompatibility: Bioelectronic substrates (e.g., biodegradable PLGA, silk fibroin, or porous PDMS) can degrade, swell unevenly, or resist wetting in pure water. Lyophilized powder can be reconstituted in polar organic solvents (DMSO, DMF, ethylene glycol, or fluorinated alcohols). (2) High Solids Loading for Direct Writing: Formulating high-viscosity pastes or shear-thinning inks for extrusion printing requires solid contents of 5–15 wt%—unachievable by simple thermal evaporation without inducing irreversible macro-aggregation. (3) Hydrogel & Composite Loading: Dry powder enables direct dry-blending into hydrogel precursors (e.g., gelatin-methacryloyl/GelMA, alginate, polyurethane) without diluting the gel precursor matrix or disrupting crosslinking stoichiometry. (4) Shelf-Life & Storage: Eliminates long-term microbial growth, hydrolysis of PSS sulfonate groups, and irreversible room-temperature sedimentation/flocculation.
