Glass microfiber is a non-woven mat made from extremely fine borosilicate glass fibers, which is the primary choice for industrial lead-acid batteries and a staple in advanced battery research (Lithium-Sulfur, Sodium-Ion, etc.). It has the following features: (1) High Porosity (75% – 90%): Unlike polymer membranes which have slit-like pores, glass fiber mats are highly open networks. This leads to very low internal resistance and high ionic conductivity. (2) Superior Wettability: Glass is naturally hydrophilic. It "wicks" up electrolyte instantly and stays saturated, which is essential for consistent battery performance. (3) Extreme Heat Resistance: While common PP/PE separators melt at 135°C – 165°C, glass microfiber remains stable up to 500°C – 600°C. This makes it an "unmeltable" barrier during thermal runaway.
