Calcium trifluoromethanesulfonate (commonly designated as Ca(OTf)2 or calcium triflate) is a high-purity metal-organic salt widely investigated as a primary electrolyte solute for rechargeable calcium-ion batteries (CIBs). By pairing a divalent calcium cation (Ca^{2+}) with charge-delocalized, hydrophobic trifluoromethanesulfonate (CF3SO3^-) anions, Ca(OTf)2 provides a conductive, halide-free alternative to traditional chloride- or perchlorate-based calcium salts.

Its functional roles in electrolyte engineering are: (1) Divalent Ion Transport & High Energy Density: As a divalent charge carrier, each calcium ion transfers two electrons per redox event, offering a pathway toward higher volumetric capacity compared to monovalent alkali systems (Li+, Na+). (2) Halide-Free Corrosion Mitigation: Unlike corrosive calcium halide salts (CaCl2), which aggressively pit aluminum current collectors and degrade cell components, Ca(OTf)2 provides a non-chloride environment that drastically suppresses metal dissolution and premature pitting. (3) Anion-Derived Interphase Passivation: During initial electrochemical cycling, the triflate anion participates in reductive decomposition at the electrode interface, assisting in the formation of a hybrid inorganic-organic Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) containing fluorides and sulfites.

Its primary electrochemical application domains are: (1) Rechargeable Calcium-Ion Batteries: Utilized in organic liquid and gel polymer electrolyte formulations to study reversible intercalation into transition metal oxides, sulfides, and specialized host materials. (2) Alternative Anode Integration: Deployed in research aiming to overcome the high desolvation energy and passivation challenges associated with calcium metal deposition and stripping.
