In electrochemical systems, carbon paper serves as a macroporous substrate for the Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL), acting as the critical interface between the flow field and the catalyst layer. While it is a standard component in fuel cells, its use in electrolyzers is strictly limited by the operating environment.
A high-performance GDL typically consists of a bilayer structure: (1) Macroporous Substrate: A non-woven sheet of carbon fibers (e.g., Toray, Sigracet, or AvCarb) providing mechanical support and electrical/thermal conductivity. (2) Microporous Layer (MPL): A thin coating of carbon black and a hydrophobic agent (typically 5–15% PTFE) applied to one side. It reduces contact resistance with the catalyst, protects the membrane from fiber perforation, and aids in water management.
