Graphite felt (GF) is a highly versatile, 3D porous carbon material that acts as a structural electrode, reaction site, and current distribution layer across electrochemical energy conversion systems. Its selection criteria, thickness, and surface functionalization vary depending on whether it is deployed in flow batteries, water electrolyzers, or fuel cells.
(1) Redox Flow Batteries (VRFB, Iron-Chromium, All-Soluble): In flow batteries, the liquid electrolyte is pumped directly through the porous felt (flow-through or flow-by field). It mainly serves as the primary electrode providing active sites for heterogeneous electron transfer between vanadium/iron species and the current collector.
(2) In Water Electrolyzers (PEMWE & Alkaline Electrolyzers) application field, It functions as a Porous Transport Layer (PTL) that transports liquid water to the catalyst layer while allowing evolved gas bubbles (H2 or O2) to escape efficiently.
(3) In Fuel Cells (PEMFC, PAFC, Direct Methanol) application field, it mainly acts as a Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL) or liquid-fuel transport matrix, conducting electrons from the catalyst layer to the bipolar plate while managing mass transport.
