Sulfonated Polyether Ether Ketone (SPEEK) is a high-performance, non-fluorinated polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM). It is synthesized by the sulfonation of PEEK, a rigid, semi-crystalline thermoplastic. SPEEK has emerged as the primary low-cost alternative to perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes like Nafion, particularly for Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFBs) and Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFCs). The performance of SPEEK is governed by its Degree of Sulfonation (DS)—the percentage of PEEK repeat units that have been attached to a sulfonic acid (-SO3H) group.
