A gel electrolyte (often called a quasi-solid-state electrolyte) is a hybrid material that combines a liquid electrolyte with a solid polymer matrix. In supercapacitor R&D, these are the "holy grail" for flexible and wearable electronics because they offer the safety of a solid (no leakage) with the ion transport speeds of a liquid.
The polymer acts as a structural "skeleton" or host, while the liquid electrolyte is trapped within the polymer's pores. Ions migrate through the liquid-filled channels to the electrode surface, creating the electric double layer (EDLC) or facilitating Faradaic reactions (pseudocapacitance). (1) Structure: Typically a 3D network formed by a polymer like PVA (Polyvinyl alcohol) or PEO (Polyethylene oxide). (2) Safety: They solve the leakage, evaporation, and flammability issues common with traditional liquid electrolytes. (3) Function: Because they are flexible and can act as their own separator, they allow for thinner, "all-in-one" device designs.

(1) Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) Gel Electrolyte Note: It is mainly used for high alkaline electrolyte (eg: KOH, NaOH) and neutral electrolyte (eg: NaCl, KCl, Na2SO4) under low concentration (<0.2 M).Please don't apply it to acidic electrolyte and high ion concentration (>0.5M) (2) Polyacrylamide (PAM) Gel Electrolyte Note: It is mainly used for zinc-based electrolyte (eg: ZnCl2, ZnSO4) and acidic H2SO4 electrolyte (eg: NaCl, KCl, Na2SO4) under high concentration (>3.0 M). Please don't apply it to alkaline electrolyte. |
