Glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) is a dual-functional monomer (C7H10O3) featuring both a polymerizable vinyl (methacrylate) group (CH2=C(CH3)COO-) and a reactive cyclic ether (epoxy) ring (-C2H3O). In advanced energy storage research, GMA is utilized as a versatile, dual-curing crosslinking agent and functional co-monomer for Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs). Its orthogonal reactivity allows for sequential or simultaneous radical polymerization of the vinyl backbone and ring-opening crosslinking of the epoxy groups, delivering exceptional network connectivity, strong interfacial adhesion, and robust mechanical stability for high-energy lithium and sodium metal batteries.

The main functional roles of GMA in GPEs are: (1) Dual-Network Interpenetration & Liquid Immobilization: By initiating radical polymerization through the vinyl group alongside epoxy ring-opening crosslinking, GMA enables the formation of interpenetrated or tightly knitted 3D polymer networks. This permanently traps and immobilizes organic liquid electrolytes, eliminating free-flowing leakage and enhancing thermal safety. (2) Enhanced Interfacial Adhesion & Mechanical Cohesion: The unreacted or ring-opened epoxy groups form covalent or hydrogen-bonding interactions with metal oxide surfaces on cathodes and copper/aluminum current collectors, preventing interfacial delamination during repeated volumetric expansion and contraction. (3) Suppression of Dendrite Propagation: The rigid, densely crosslinked architecture resulting from dual-curing provides a high shear modulus, creating a robust mechanical barrier that resists sharp lithium or sodium dendrite penetration during fast-charging cycles.
