Add-Ons
Triethylene glycol diacetate (TEGDA)—frequently studied in advanced energy storage research as a key component in specialized Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs) and interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) systems—combines a flexible oligo(ethylene glycol) core with polar ester functionalities. When integrated into advanced lithium and sodium battery configurations, TEGDA-based systems provide a unique balance of high ionic conductivity, robust liquid electrolyte retention, and excellent interfacial stability.
The main functional roles of TEGDA in GPEs are: (1) Interpenetrating Polymer Network (IPN) Formation: TEGDA is frequently copolymerized or blended with active co-monomers (such as acrylic acid esters or blended with polymer backbones like polyacrylonitrile [PAN]) to form robust IPN architectures. This locks liquid carbonate electrolytes into a dimensionally stable, quasi-solid matrix that entirely eliminates free-flowing leakage. (2) High Ionic Conductivity via Segmental Mobility: Because the triethylene glycol chains possess high conformational freedom, they prevent the polymer matrix from crystallizing. This maintains rapid ion-hopping pathways, allowing room-temperature ionic conductivities to routinely exceed 10^{-3} S/cm. (3) Enhanced Interfacial Wetting and Adhesion: The polar ester and ether groups promote strong wetting of porous separator frameworks (such as glass fiber or polyolefin meshes) and microstructured electrodes, minimizing interfacial resistance and suppressing local polarization during high-rate cycling.
