1,6-Hexanediol Diacrylate (HDDA) is a bifunctional aliphatic acrylate monomer (C12H18O4) featuring two reactive acrylate (CH2=CHCOO-) groups bridged by a flexible, six-carbon hexamethylene aliphatic chain (-(CH2)6-). In advanced energy storage research, HDDA is widely utilized as a high-reactivity, elastomeric crosslinking agent for Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs) and in situ polymerized solid/gel systems, offering an optimal combination of rapid free-radical curing kinetics, superior chain flexibility, and robust mechanical stress accommodation for high-energy lithium and sodium metal batteries.

The main functional roles of HDDA in GPEs are: (1) Rapid 3D Network & Liquid Immobilization: Upon thermal or UV-initiated radical polymerization (using initiators like AIBN, BPO, or photoinitiators), HDDA rapidly copolymerizes into a stable, elastomeric 3D network that permanently traps and immobilizes organic liquid electrolytes. This eliminates free-flowing liquid leakage, converting high-energy liquid cells into safe, dimensionally stable gel systems. (2) Superior Stress Accommodation During Electrode Volume Fluctuations: Due to the extended aliphatic spacer and flexible acrylate-derived network, HDDA-based GPEs possess high tensile elasticity. This enables the polymer matrix to dynamically absorb mechanical stresses and accommodate severe volume expansion and contraction—such as those encountered in silicon anodes or high-capacity lithium/sodium metal plating—without interfacial delamination or micro-cracking. (3) High Ionic Conductivity Retention: The flexible network backbone permits high segmental motion, ensuring that the crosslinked gel matrix does not overly restrict ion transport, allowing room-temperature ionic conductivities to routinely exceed 10^{-3} S/cm.
