Pentaerythritol glycidyl ether (PEGE, also named as PEE or PGE) is a high-functionality multi-epoxy monomer featuring four reactive terminal oxirane (epoxy) rings radiating from a central pentaerythritol core. In advanced energy storage research, PEGE is utilized as a robust tetrafunctional crosslinking agent for Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs) and solid-state polymer systems, delivering high crosslink density, exceptional thermal resistance, and superior mechanical rigidity for high-energy lithium and sodium metal batteries.

The main functional roles of PEGE in GPEs are: (1) Dense 3D Network & Liquid Immobilization: Upon ring-opening crosslinking with multi-functional curing agents (such as polyetheramines like Jeffamine, dicarboxylic acids, or amino-terminated prepolymers), PEGE rapidly establishes a dense 3D polymer mesh. This permanently traps and immobilizes organic liquid electrolytes, eliminating free-flowing leakage and enhancing thermal safety. (2) Suppression of Dendrite Penetration: The high crosslink density and elastic rigidity imparted by PEGE's tetrafunctional nodes create a mechanically robust barrier that resists sharp lithium or sodium dendrite propagation during fast-charging cycles, significantly reducing internal short-circuit risks in metal anode batteries. (3) Enhanced Interfacial Adhesion and Cohesion: The polar epoxy-derived hydroxyl groups formed during ring-opening curing promote strong wetting and adhesion to both separator matrices and current collectors, minimizing interfacial resistance.
