Trimethylolpropane triglycidyl ether (TMPTGE) is a multi-functional aliphatic glycidyl ether epoxy monomer (C15H26O6) featuring three reactive epoxy groups per molecule branching from a central trimethylolpropane core. In advanced energy storage research, TMPTGE is widely utilized as a robust crosslinking agent and structural modifier for Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs) and epoxy-based vitrimer solid electrolytes, delivering exceptional mechanical toughness, high crosslink density, and tight control over dimensional stability in lithium and sodium metal batteries.

The main functional roles of TMPTGE as crosslinking monomer for GPEs are: (1) Tight 3D Network Formation & Liquid Immobilization: Upon ring-opening crosslinking (via multi-functional amines, organic acids, or Lewis acid catalysts), TMPTGE forms a dense, sponge-like polymer cage that permanently traps and immobilizes organic liquid electrolytes. This eliminates free-flowing solvent leakage, prevents dripping, and converts liquid cells into safe, quasi-solid systems. (2) Suppression of Lithium Dendrite Penetration: The high crosslink density and dense elastic modulus of TMPTGE-cured networks provide excellent mechanical resistance against sharp lithium dendrite propagation during rapid charging cycles, mitigating internal short-circuit risks in high-capacity lithium metal batteries. (3) Dynamic Vitrimer and Self-Healing Properties: When formulated with specific exchangeable crosslinkers (such as dicarboxylic acids), TMPTGE networks can form covalent adaptable networks (vitrimers). This imparts unique stress-relaxation and thermal-healing capabilities, allowing the electrolyte to accommodate severe electrode volume changes during prolonged cycling without losing interfacial contact.
