1,1,1,3,3,3-Hexafluoroisopropyl Acrylate (HFIPA) is a specialized fluorinated monomer (C6H6F6O2) featuring a reactive acrylate (CH2=CHCOO-) group esterified with a bulky, highly fluorinated hexafluoroisopropyl (-CH(CF3)2) group. In advanced energy storage research, HFIPA is utilized as a high-performance functional co-monomer for Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs). By copolymerizing into the 3D polymer network, it combines rapid acrylate curing kinetics with exceptional oxidative stability and targeted interfacial passivation for high-voltage lithium and sodium metal batteries.

The main functional roles of HFIPA in GPEs are: (1) Targeted Fluorine-Rich Interphase (SEI/CEI Engineering): Upon initial electrochemical formation or thermal curing, the fluorinated ester side chains undergo controlled decomposition to participate in forming a dense, inorganic-rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) on anodes and Cathode Electrolyte Interphase (CEI) on high-voltage cathodes. This interphase is rich in lithium fluoride (LiF) and fluorophosphates, which suppress transition-metal dissolution. (2) Suppression of High-Voltage Electrolyte Oxidation: By concentrating fluorinated polymer segments at the solid-liquid boundaries, HFIPA shields the bulk carbonate liquid electrolyte from catalytic decomposition and gas evolution at elevated voltages (such as 4.6V LCO or ultra-high-nickel NCM systems). (3) Enhanced Ionic Conductivity via Free-Volume Expansion: Unlike linear, highly crystalline fluoropolymers that can restrict ionic mobility, the bulky branched structure of HFIPA prevents dense backbone aggregation, maintaining high room-temperature ionic conductivities when plasticized with liquid electrolytes.
