Scandium(III) triflate [Sc(OTf)3, also called Scandium(III) Trifluoromethanesulfonate] is a highly active, water-tolerant Lewis acid catalyst and cationic polymerization initiator (Sc(CF3SO3)3). In advanced energy storage research, Sc(OTf)3 is utilized to drive the in situ cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP) of multi-epoxy, cyclic ether, and oxetane crosslinking monomers (such as PEGE, PEGDE, and TMPTE) for Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs), delivering rapid curing kinetics, superior thermal stability, and robust interfacial passivation in high-energy lithium, sodium, and metal-ion batteries.

The main functional roles of Sc(OTf)3 in GPEs are: (1) Initiation of Cationic Ring-Opening Polymerization (CROP): Sc(OTf)3 coordinates with the oxygen atoms of epoxide or cyclic ether monomers, polarizing the ring and rendering it susceptible to nucleophilic attack by adjacent monomers. This triggers rapid chain growth and crosslinking without generating gaseous byproducts or requiring external UV irradiation. (2) Robust In Situ Gelation in Sealed Cells: Catalyzes uniform, controlled solidification of liquid precursor solutions infiltrating porous separator membranes (glass fiber, PE/PP) and dense electrode microstructures at moderate thermal settings (55°C-70°C), completely eliminating free-flowing liquid electrolyte leakage. (3) Interfacial Passivation & Ionic Transport Enhancement: The Lewis-acidic scandium sites and triflate anions actively interact with polar groups on polymer segments and lithium/sodium salts, assisting in anion complexation, mitigating concentration polarization, and participating in the formation of a stable, inorganic-rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) on metal anodes.
