Tin(II) trifluoromethanesulfonate [Sn(OTf)2]—commonly referred to as tin(II) triflate (Sn(CF3SO3)2)—is a highly active Lewis acid catalyst and cationic polymerization initiator. In advanced energy storage research, Sn(OTf)2 is widely utilized to drive the in situ ring-opening polymerization of cyclic ether solvents (such as 1,3-dioxolane [DOL]) and multi-epoxy/ether crosslinking precursors for Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs) and quasi-solid-state sodium and lithium metal batteries. Beyond its catalytic function, Sn^{2+} species actively participate in electrochemical reduction processes to engineer robust, hybrid protective interphases on alkali metal anodes.

The main functional roles of Sn(OTf)2 in GPEs are: (1) Initiation of Cationic Ring-Opening Polymerization (CROP): Sn(OTf)2 coordinates with cyclic ether monomers (such as DOL), activating the ring structure toward nucleophilic attack. This triggers spontaneous chain propagation to convert liquid precursors into a dimensionally stable poly(ether)-based quasi-solid gel network. (2) In Situ Formation of Hybrid SEI Passivation Layers: During initial cell formation cycles, cathodic reduction of Sn^{2+} yields a uniform metal-tin alloy and inorganic-rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI). This hybrid layer homogenizes local ionic flux, suppresses parasitic side reactions, and mitigates dendrite penetration during extended high-rate cycling.   (3) Elimination of Interfacial Resistance: The low-viscosity liquid precursor thoroughly infiltrates porous separators and dense electrode microstructures before setting. Upon in situ polymerization, it establishes intimate interfacial contact, drastically reducing boundary resistance.
