Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based Gel Polymer Electrolyte (GPE) plasticized with a LiPF6-carbonate liquid electrolyte bridges the gap between conventional liquid electrolytes and solid-state polymer membranes. While dry PEO electrolytes suffer from high crystallinity and poor room-temperature ionic conductivity (requiring high-temperature operation at 60-80°C), the incorporation of organic liquid plasticizers amorphouses the polymer matrix, yielding high room-temperature ionic conductivity (> 10^{-3} S/cm, superior flexibility, and excellent interfacial wettability with both electrodes.
The main features of the LiPF6/PEO-Based gel polymer electrolyte are: (1) Amorphous Phase Promotion: The liquid plasticizer disrupts PEO chain folding and crystallinity, facilitating rapid segmental motion and Li+ ion transport along ether oxygen coordination sites. (2) Mechanical & Interfacial Stability: Provides a self-standing, elastomeric membrane that accommodates electrode volume fluctuations during cycling while preventing lithium dendrite short-circuits. (3) Thermal Sensitivity: Requires careful control during casting and drying to prevent thermal degradation of both PEO and moisture-sensitive LiPF6.
