Add-Ons
Utilizing Polybenzimidazole (PBI)—specifically poly(2,2'-m-phenylene-5,5'-bibenzimidazole)—as a polymer matrix or ionomer backbone offers extreme thermal stability, chemical inertness, and exceptional acid-retention capabilities for high-temperature electrochemical cells (such as HT-PEM fuel cells, redox flow batteries, and acid-doped solid polymer electrolytes). When choosing between raw PBI powder or pre-dissolved PBI dopes/dispersions for membrane fabrication, key parameters govern the processing workflow:
PBI Powder: It allows precise control over the polymer concentration, solvent selection, and additive incorporation (such as ceramic nanoparticles, crosslinkers, or functionalized dopants). It requires high-boiling polar aprotic solvents like N,N-Dimethylacetamide (DMAc), N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), or Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), typically requiring elevated temperatures (100-220°C) under pressure, alongside a small amount of salt modifier (e.g., 1–2% Lithium Chloride (LiCl)) to prevent polymer aggregation or "phasing out".
PBI Dispersion: Whether starting from powder (post-dissolution) or pre-formulated dope, solution casting is the standard route to dense, defect-free PBI films.
