High-compaction-density LiMn0.7Fe0.3PO4 (LMFP73) cathode powder represents a major advancement in olivine-structure lithium-ion battery materials. By substituting 70% of the iron with manganese, LMFP73 elevates the average operating voltage from LFP's standard 3.4 V to approximately 4.1 V, substantially boosting both gravimetric and volumetric energy density while retaining the inherent thermal stability and safety of the olivine structure. Achieving a powder compaction density of ≥ 2.25 g/cm3 is critical for LMFP, as it compensates for its intrinsically lower electronic and ionic conductivity compared to pure LFP.

The key electrochemical performance of high compaction density LMFP73 is shown below: (1) Elevated Energy Density: The 4.1 V plateau bridges the gap between traditional LFP and mid-nickel NCM (such as NCM523 or NCM622), making it a high-voltage, cobalt-free alternative. (2) Cost & Safety Balance: It retains the low raw-material cost and robust thermal runaway resistance typical of phosphate systems, avoiding the severe thermal risks of high-nickel chemistries. (3) Optimized Tap & Compaction Density: Reaching ≥ 2.25 g/cm3 powder density (and higher electrode densities post-calendering) shortens internal diffusion paths and enhances particle-to-particle contact, mitigating high polarization.
