Fabricating Lithium- and Manganese-Rich (LMR) NCM (specifically the Li(1.2)Ni(0.13)Co(0.13)Mn(0.54)O2 stoichiometry) as a high-loading dry electrode is a cutting-edge approach to maximizing energy density. While LMR provides superior specific capacity (~250–280 mAh/g), dry processing addresses the mechanical and chemical instabilities inherent in high-loading electrodes.

Conventional "wet" slurry casting faces severe "mud-cracking" and binder migration issues when mass loadings exceed 20–30 mg/cm². (1) Elimination of Binder Migration: In wet processing, NMP/binder rises to the surface during drying, leaving the bottom of a high-loading electrode brittle. Dry processing creates a uniform 3D PTFE "spider-web" network that holds the LMR particles in place throughout the entire thickness. (2) Reduced Side Reactions: LMR materials are sensitive to moisture and the acidic byproducts of NMP. Dry processing bypasses solvent exposure, preserving the sensitive Li2MnO3 surface phase. (3) High Compaction: Dry electrodes can achieve much higher tap densities. For LMR, which has a lower compact density than high-nickel NCM, this is essential to achieve competitive volumetric energy density.

The LMR NCM coated on aluminum foil electrode (disc, sheet) can be used as lithium-ion battery cathode. The round disc shape with single-side coating is suitable for coin cell testing, while the rectangle sheet shape with single- or double-side coating is designed for single-layer or multiple-layer pouch cell testing.
