Developing NCM811 (LiNi₀.₈Co₀.₁Mn₀.₁O₂) dry electrodes for high-loading cathodes is a high-priority area for increasing the energy density of lithium-ion batteries. While NCM811 offers high specific capacity, its high nickel content makes it sensitive to the environment and traditional processing methods.
Dry electrode technology is particularly advantageous for NCM811 because it bypasses the chemical and mechanical risks associated with solvent-based "wet" processing. (1) Moisture Sensitivity: High-nickel oxides like NCM811 are prone to forming lithium residuals (LiOH and Na2CO3) on their surface when exposed to ambient humidity or the water/NMP used in wet slurries. This leads to slurry gelation and aluminum foil corrosion. Dry processing eliminates these liquid-phase interactions. (2) Binder Migration Prevention: In traditional wet-coated thick electrodes, the binder often migrates toward the surface during the drying process, causing the electrode to become brittle at the bottom. Dry processing ensures a uniform distribution of the PTFE binder through the entire thickness. (3) Micro-Cracking Mitigation: NCM811 secondary particles are susceptible to micro-cracking during cycling due to anisotropic volume changes. The elastic PTFE fibril network in a dry electrode can accommodate these stresses better than the rigid PVDF used in wet processing.
NCM811 (LiNi₀.₈Co₀.₁Mn₀.₁O₂) Dry Electrode can be used as sodium-ion battery cathode. The round disc shape with single-side coating is suitable for coin cell testing, while the rectangle sheet shape with single- or double-side coating is designed for single-layer or multiple-layer pouch cell testing.
