Lithium formate (HCOOLi) serves two distinct roles in battery electrochemistry: primarily as an emerging sacrificial cathode pre-lithiation additive, and secondarily as an interphasial modifier and native byproduct in the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI).

Cathode Sacrificial Pre-Lithiation Agent: Similar to lithium oxalate (Li2C2O4) and dilithium squarate (Li2C4O4), anhydrous lithium formate (HCOOLi) is used to compensate for the first-cycle irreversible capacity loss (ICL) in high-capacity anode systems (such as silicon-graphite and hard carbon).
