Li2C2O4 is primarily deployed as an in-situ lithium-compensating sacrificial additive to offset first-cycle irreversible capacity loss (ICL) caused by initial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation:

(1) High Gravimetric Capacity: Delivers a theoretical lithium-release capacity of 525 mAh g-1. (2) Zero Solid Residue: Unlike transition-metal sacrificial salts (such as Li5FeO4 or Li2NiO2), decomposition yields only Li+ ions and CO2 gas. The gas is vented during the standard pouch/can formation degassing step, leaving no dead weight in the cell. (3) Air and Ambient Stability: Stable under dry and ambient atmospheric moisture compared to reactive lithium nitride (Li3N) or lithium peroxide (Li2O2).
