Add-Ons
Lithium 1,1,2,2,3,3-hexafluoropropane-1,3-disulfonimide, commonly abbreviated as LiHFDF (CAS Number: 189217-62-7), is an advanced, highly fluorinated imide-based compound. In advanced lithium-ion battery research, it functions as a specialized functional electrolyte additive (and structural relative to popular imide salts like LiTFSI and LiFSI).
When introduced into carbonate- or ether-based electrolytes (typically in small percentages as a film-forming additive), LiHFDF targets critical interfacial stability challenges: (1) Inorganic-Rich Interphase Engineering: LiHFDF preferentially decomposes during initial formation cycles, participating actively in the construction of robust protective layers on both electrodes. Its decomposition pathway heavily promotes the generation of lithium fluoride (LiF) and sulfur-containing inorganic species. (2) Cathode Protection (CEI Customization): Studies evaluating LiHFDF in high-voltage and high-capacity configurations (such as layered lithium-rich nickel-manganese oxides or LLROs) show that it assists in forming a thin, compact cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI). This dense layer suppresses transition metal dissolution catalyzed by high voltages and mitigates continuous electrolyte oxidation. (3) Mitigating Voltage Decay: By stabilizing the surface structure of high-energy transition metal oxides, LiHFDF-derived interphases help alleviate severe voltage fade and capacity recession over extended cycling. (4) Thermal Safety Enhancement: Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) evaluations of electrodes cycled with LiHFDF-modified electrolytes frequently demonstrate elevated exothermic decomposition thresholds, indicating improved thermal stability and reduced reactivity under abuse conditions.
