DOL (1,3-Dioxolane) is a cyclic ether solvent highly valued in advanced battery chemistries, particularly Lithium-Sulfur (Li-S) and Lithium Metal Batteries (LMBs). The primary benefit of DOL stems from its compatibility with highly reactive anodes and its ability to act as a monomer for forming solid or gel polymer electrolytes. For example, in Li-S battery application field, (1) DOL is a crucial co-solvent, often paired with Dimethoxyethane (DME), because this ether-based system is highly effective at dissolving lithium polysulfides (the intermediate products in the Li-S reaction. (2) DOL helps to stabilize the lithium metal anode by forming a stable Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI), which is critical for preventing dendrite growth and achieving high Coulombic efficiency.
