The graphene-coated PE separator is a high-tech composite membrane that leverages the extraordinary electrical and thermal properties of graphene to enhance lithium-ion batteries. The key roles of graphene coating in the composite separator: (1) It acts as a "heat sink," quickly spreading localized heat across the entire surface of the separator, which prevents "hot spots" that lead to thermal runaway. While the PE substrate still provides a thermal shutdown at ~135°C, the graphene layer ensures the battery operates much cooler overall. (2) The graphene layer acts as a physical and chemical trap for these polysulfides molecules and improves the cycle life and efficiency of next-generation batteries.
