Using [AMMPyr][TFSI] (1-Allyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium Bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide) as a crosslinking monomer for poly(ionic liquids) (PILs) bridges the gap between liquid-like ionic conductivity and robust solid-state polymer mechanics. Because [AMMPyr][TFSI] features both a polymerizable allyl group (-CH=CH2) and an electrochemically stable ionic liquid framework, it functions dually as an active structural crosslinker and a conductive ionic solvent.
The main advantage of [AMMPyr][TFSI] used in poly(ionic liquid) are: (1) Suppression of Macro-Phase Separation: Traditional liquid ionic liquids blended into polymer matrices tend to leak or phase-separate over prolonged thermal or mechanical stress. Because [AMMPyr][TFSI] chemically bonds directly into the polymer network via its allyl handle, it is permanently anchored, eliminating leakage. (2) High Free-Volume & Ion Transport: The pyrrolidinium ring paired with the bulky, charge-delocalized TFSI- anion lowers crystallinity and provides low glass transition temperatures (Tg), maintaining high ambient ionic conductivities (10^{-4} to 10^(-3) S/cm) even within crosslinked networks. (3) Wide Electrochemical & Thermal Stability: The resulting crosslinked PIL gel exhibits high anodic stability (>4.5 V vs. Li/Li+) and excellent thermal resistance, making it suitable for high-voltage lithium metal and sodium metal batteries.
