[VMIM][TFSI] (1-vinyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide) is a fundamental, highly reactive polymerizable ionic liquid (monomer). Featuring a vinyl group directly attached to the imidazolium ring paired with the electrochemically stable [TFSI]- anion, it serves as a primary building block for creating homopolymers, copolymers, and crosslinked poly(ionic liquids) (PILs).
The main advantage of [VMIM][TFSI] used in poly(ionic liquid) are: (1) High Charge Density & Ion Mobility: The compact imidazolium core combined with the small methyl group ensures a high concentration of charge carriers, promoting rapid ion transport within the polymer matrix. (2) Thermal and Electrochemical Stability: The [TFSI]- anion imparts high thermal decomposition thresholds and a wide electrochemical stability window (>4.5 V vs. Li/Li+), making PIL networks derived from [VMIM][TFSI] suitable for solid-state batteries and supercapacitors. (3) Solid-State Electrolyte Hosting: By swelling [VMIM][TFSI]-based crosslinked networks with lithium or sodium salts and complementary plasticizers, researchers achieve solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) that eliminate leakage risks while retaining high ambient conductivity.
