Tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate—commonly abbreviated as TEABF4 (CAS Number: 429-06-1)—is the benchmark, most widely utilized quaternary ammonium salt for commercial and high-performance laboratory-scale organic supercapacitors (Electric Double-Layer Capacitors, EDLCs).

TEABF4 is rarely used on its own; it is formulated as the active ionic solute in high-purity, moisture-free organic aprotic solvents: (i) Acetonitrile (AN) Based Recipe (Standard High-Power): 1.0 M TEABF4 dissolved in anhydrous Acetonitrile (AN). It offers the lowest viscosity and highest ionic conductivity among organic electrolytes (often exceeding 50–60 mS/cm at room temperature), enabling exceptional rate capability and low equivalent series resistance (ESR). (ii) Propylene Carbonate (PC) Based Recipe: 1.0 M TEABF4 dissolved in anhydrous Propylene Carbonate (PC). PC provides a higher boiling point, lower volatility, and a broader liquid range than acetonitrile. Although lower in conductivity due to PC's higher viscosity, this formulation is favored for cells requiring extended high-temperature shelf life or improved safety profiles.

Its main electrochemical performance features are: (1) Wide Operating Potential Window: Enables stable supercapacitor cell voltage windows of 2.7 V to 3.0 V (compared to ~1.2 V for aqueous systems), directly boosting energy density. (2) Effective Pore Access: The effective solvated ionic radii of TEA+ and BF4^- match well with the optimized micropore distribution (0.7–1.2 nm) of activated carbon electrodes, ensuring high specific capacitance values. (3) Long Cycle Life: Chemically inert toward standard carbon current collectors and aluminum foil terminals, supporting hundreds of thousands of deep charge-discharge cycles with minimal capacity fade.
