Sodium-tin (NaxSny) alloy powders—most notably phases like Na15Sn4—are high-capacity alloy-type anode systems and sacrificial stabilizing additives designed for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) and sodium metal batteries. Tin electrochemically reacts with sodium through a series of multi-step alloying transitions, culminating in Na15Sn4 as the final fully sodiated product, delivering a high theoretical specific capacity of 847 mAh/g.

The key characteristics and electrochemical behavior of the Na-Sn alloy powder are: (1) High Theoretical Capacity: Far surpasses traditional carbon-based anodes (like hard carbon at ~ 300-350 mAh/g, offering substantial energy density gains for advanced SIBs. (2) Sacrificial Additive & Reservoir Role: Pre-synthesized Na15Sn4 powder is frequently utilized as a sacrificial anode compensation additive (e.g., blended into hard carbon electrodes). It releases active sodium ions during the initial charge to compensate for irreversible capacity losses, significantly boosting initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE). (3) Interfacial Stabilization: In solid-state or metal batteries, NaxSny alloy layers act as lithiophilic/sodiophilic functional interfaces that lower nucleation overpotential and guide uniform sodium stripping/plating.
