Using P2-type Na₂/3Ni₁/3Mn₂/3O2 (NNMO) coated on aluminum foil represents a move toward the high-voltage frontier of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). While the O3-type (like NNFMO) typically offers higher initial sodium content, the P2-type NNMO is favored for its superior sodium-ion diffusion kinetics and structural stability at higher rates.
Compared to the polyanion NFPP or the layered O3-type materials, P2-NNMO offers a unique set of characteristics: (1) Faster Kinetics: The P2 structure has larger interstitial sites, allowing Na+ ions to move more freely than in the O3 structure. (2) Voltage Profile: It typically operates in a higher voltage window (up to 4.2-}4.5V), though it is often capped at 4.2V to avoid the P2-O2 phase transition which can cause structural collapse. (3) Air Stability: While still sensitive, P2-type oxides are generally more stable against moisture and CO2 than O3-type oxides, making the coating process slightly more forgiving.
P2-type Na₂/3Ni₁/3Mn₂/3O2 (NNMO) coated on aluminum foil electrode (disc, sheet) can be used as sodium-ion battery cathode. The round disc shape with single-side coating is suitable for coin cell testing, while the rectangle sheet shape with single- or double-side coating is designed for single-layer or multiple-layer pouch cell testing.
